The time now is I cannot really say which steps are necessary to reproduce this problem.
I will write down the steps I used. It appears that rfkill may indeed be the problem, but the situation is that rfkill works first time only if the laptop was rebooted from windows.

What does ‘rfkill list’ show after only killing hald-addon-rfkill-killswitch? If A5001 set the wlan switch to off in Vista and reboot into Fedora, rfkill reports both locks to be off when Fedora had been active before Vista it had had connection to the wlan and both blocks off so I assume Fedora didn’t check this again at boot time. You are not directly subscribed to this a5r001 notifications. Even though I had my ethernet cable plugged into the laptop, it was still trying to reconnect to a wifi network in the house, and there is no telling how long this dialog box had been up, causing my cpu to run hotter.
That one only happens occasionally and I haven’t found a way to reproduce it consistently. You’re just not having much luck with that laptop, huh?

I’m using Wicd with ath5k on Squeeze and everything works. Comment on this change optional.
